Sayap

This dance originated in Salunayan, Midsayap, Cotabato. It is usually performed during festivals. According to a legend, there is a statue made of stone in this place which they believe is a girl who was cursed because of disobedience to her parents.

The story goes that the girl was betrothed to a boy of the same social class. But she fell in love with a commoner. So she sneaked to meet with boy disguising herself with the use of a sayap, a native hat of Cotabato similar to a small salakot. She was caught by her parents sneaking out so she was cursed and became a stone.

This dance is usually performed to warn ladies not to follow her footsteps.
